7 Ways to Prevent Home Invasion Plus the One Easiest and Most Overlooked Detail

Home invasions have become an increasing reality. From a burglar's perspective, your home is a cash cow with hundreds or thousands of dollars just ripe for the picking. If you are fortunate, you won't be present if a thief decides to target your house. I say fortunate because you can always replace material goods. You cannot replace your life and well being or that of your loved ones.
The most dangerous break-ins occur when the homeowner or residents are present. The probability of great bodily injury occurring increases greatly if you are able to identify the intruder. Additionally, there are those who breach the inner sanctum of your home not to deprive you of your possessions, but simply to commit more heinous crimes such as rape, kidnapping, and murder.
Many people think that home intrusion is a random act, so being a victim of a home intruder is nearly unavoidable. This is the furthest thing from the truth. There are several measures you can take to prevent this from happening, including one that is the most overlooked and yet easiest to do.
  1. Your front door is the primary object that keeps the outside from coming in. While windows are also vulnerable, your doors hold the key (pun intended) to your safety. Invest in a strong wooden or metal one.
  2. Install quality deadbolt locks. If you get a decent door, then proceed to put in a cheap lock, you will have wasted your money.
  3. Secure any glass sliding doors with a door brace. Glass doors have notoriously cheap locks that are quite easy to open.
  4. Get motions sensor lights for the outside of your home.
  5. Install some type of alarm system inside your home, in case someone does manage to get in. You don't even have to get a monitored system if you can't afford it. Just get high decibel motion sensor alarms that will alert you to an intruder.
  6. Keep your cell phone handy, especially at nighttime.
  7. Have some type of self defense weapon readily available. This can be a firearm, or something non lethal like a 4 oz can of pepper spray that has a 20 foot range. Find something you are comfortable with and keep it handy!
Finally, the one most important and most overlooked measure you can take to secure your home - LOCK YOUR DOORS!
I am always amazed at the number of people who leave their doors unlocked when they are home and even when they are not. Even if you live in a good neighborhood, don't assume crime is not a problem. There are so many cases of home intrusions which ended in burglary, rape and even death where the predator simply walked into a home through an unlocked door. Remember, your 'good' neighborhood is probably just a short walk or ride away from a 'bad' neighborhood.
No one can guarantee your safety 100% of the time. Even the most heavily body guarded people have at times fallen victim to someone intent on doing them harm, no matter what the cost. There are things you can do to reduce your chances of being the next statistic of home invasion. Make the decision to stay safe.
